A few days after Hathaway rocked the red carpet, he appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. During the ensuing conversation, Hathaway explained what led to her being defamed. Based on Hathaway’s version of events, almost everything went wrong for her on the night of the 2013 BAFTA Awards show.
As Hathaway explained to Leno, the BAFTA Awards night got off to a rough start for her. “I have the flu.”
From there, things only went from bad to worse for the actor. Like all actors, Hathaway had to get dressed and go through the process of fixing her hair and makeup before hitting the red carpet.
Unfortunately for Hathaway, however, the first step in his preparations went completely wrong. As Hathaway explained to Leno, she had a wardrobe malfunction as she tried to get ready.
“This dress was custom made for me. … It was so amazing. And the zipper broke! … My stylist went, ‘Oh God,’ and literally ran out of the room. I don’t know where she went. “She just ran away.”

Once Hathaway’s stylist returned, she brought a backup dress for the actor. However, surprisingly, Hathaway explained to Leno that things had not yet worked out at that time.
According to Hathaway, she had to be sewn into another dress only to realize it didn’t fit. “I look like a turkey sewn together.”
After Hathaway had to cut out of her second dress of the night, her stylist came to the rescue with a third gown. Fortunately, Hathaway’s third outfit of the night looked amazing, but by then the damage was done.
Between everything Hathaway went through to get ready, she and her team were significantly behind schedule. As a result, by the time Hathaway arrived at the BAFTA Awards, she needed to walk down the red carpet to get inside the building in time.
As Hathaway explained to Leno, her late arrival forced her to run past interviewers and fans on the red carpet. As other stars signed autographs for fans, Hathaway was mobbed by them.
“I was so late that I had to run straight to the end of the carpet and missed all the interviews. And, worst of all, I missed the fans – the autographs. They’re out in the cold and the rain and It drizzled, and they shouted at me! … So, I panicked, my dress tore and I got the flu.”

“Ten years ago, I was given the opportunity to see hate speech from a new perspective. For context – this was a language I had been using with myself since I was seven years old. And when your self-inflicted pain suddenly somehow comes back to haunt you in, say, the full volume of the Internet…that’s one thing.”
Later during her speech, Hathaway discussed realizing after the backlash that she wanted to do everything she could to avoid this kind of hate.
“When it happened to me, I realized that this is not it. This was not the place. When what happened, happened, I realized that I had nothing to do with this line of energy at any level. I will no longer make art from this place. I will no longer make room for it, live in fear of it, or speak its language for any reason, with anyone, including myself.”
Most importantly for Hathaway, her way out of the backlash was to support women who found success.
“Hate seems to me the opposite of life; Nothing can grow properly in hard soil. I want to say: be happy for women. duration. Be especially happy for high-achieving women. Like, it’s not that hard.”
