United States – Strong winds, heavy rain and flooding. Since the evening of Sunday, February 5, California in the United States has been hit by a storm called the “Pineapple Express” or “Pineapple Express” in French. But what is it about?
As AFP explains, the downpour – it has been raining for more than 24 hours without stopping – comes from a large rain corridor that transforms water vapor stored in the tropics around Hawaii, hence its strange name.
“Prevailing winds create this “river” across the warm band of tropical water vapor, which crosses the Pacific (…). When it reaches the West Coast, the Pineapple Express can dump up to five inches. A storm has hit the state now “Major, with potentially life-threatening consequences”California Governor Gavin Newsom issued a warning on Sunday, declaring a state of emergency in eight of the 58 counties.
The damage has already been observed. Local officials said three people died due to falling trees. According to images from the American press, roads have been cut off, cars have been buried by the mud and houses have been moved from their foundations.
Heavy rain is expected to continue until at least Tuesday, further inundating the ground and raising the risk of flooding. However, the rain is expected to become lighter in the coming hours.
