Two men were shot dead by police in Nebraska

Two off-duty police officers shot and killed two men in an SUV in Nebraska’s largest city, authorities said, though they provided few details of the incident.

Two Omaha police officers were working at a local business around 2 a.m. Saturday when they opened fire on the men in the SUV, police said.

The men — Fernando Rodriguez-Juarez, 26, and Jonathan Hernandez-Rosels, 28 — were taken to a local hospital where they died.

Police said there was a gun in the vehicle, though they did not say it was illegal or prompted officers to shoot. The agency also did not disclose whether the officers, whom it did not identify, identified themselves as police officers at the time of the shooting or whether they were wearing their police uniforms.

One officer was wearing a body camera at the time of the incident and detectives are reviewing surveillance camera video from nearby businesses as part of their investigation, the agency said.

Both police officers have been placed on paid leave while the investigation continues.

Police, the Nebraska State Patrol and the Douglas County Police Interactions Investigation Unit are investigating what happened.

The police department did not respond to an email requesting more information about the shooting.
