Health: Treatment can halve stroke mortality – (France 2)
A French company is developing a treatment that could reduce their mortality by more than 50%. Journalist and doctor Damian Muskrat explains the concept on the set of 20 Hours.
A French company is developing a treatment that could reduce stroke mortality by more than 50%. It will be effective if administered at the first symptoms. “We have to act fast when a stroke is caused by a blood clot. This new treatment helps to thin the blood. Because when an artery is blocked, it means that part of the brain is not getting oxygen.”Damian Muskrat explains.
Clinical trials are awaited
The journalist recalls that “Even when we manage to unblock the artery, blood circulation to the brain does not always recover well. And, unfortunately, 60% of patients have after effects”. With this new treatment, “A clinical trial has just shown that we achieved better reperfusion without hemorrhage in the brain. Now it remains to be seen whether the benefit is confirmed in a larger clinical trial”concludes Damien Muskrat.
