Surprising twists and endings are explained by the director of this science fiction film
If the enemy While not entirely satisfying, it does leave us with a few questions. To better understand the film, director Garth Davis gave an interview to the American site Entertainment Weekly and returned to certain points. In 2023, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become increasingly important, especially with ChatGPT. Through texts or images circulating on the Internet, Internet users have increasingly questioned themselves whether what they were seeing was real and whether it was created by humans or AI. This question is thus central to the science fiction film the enemy Available on Prime Video with Paul Meskal and Saoirse Ronan. Based on Ian Reed’s novel of the same name, the feature film centers on a couple living as recluses on a secluded farm in near-future America. As climate change ravages the planet, a new government program seeks to test both the viability of humans living in space and the possibility of replacing those left behind with AI-like looks. Junior (Paul Mescal) is chosen, which throws his marriage into turmoil.

What is the message of the film? the enemy ? The director answers!
“What drew me to the book was this central relationship. This is the beating heart of the story. But the novel also has these wonderful metaphors: how a decaying marriage mirrors a decaying planet. I am also fascinated by the question of identity and how we know what is real. This question is not unique to artificial intelligence as we can ask ourselves even in a long-term relationship: are we losing our identity? Are we changed by our partner’s identity?“, the director began to explain. If, at first, we feel that the film is heading towards the stars, in the end it is very down to earth because it is anchored on a couple living a rural life. Hen (Saoirse Ronan ) as a waitress at an American diner and Junior works at a chicken factory.”AI is fascinating because it opens up parts of your brain that aren’t normally open and makes you think about your own humanity and sensitivity.Garth Davies added. Trees have sensitivity, everything has sensitivity, and we all have a responsibility to them. The Chicken Factory is interesting because they also have sentience, but we only see them on the production line. When this AI becomes human, how will we react? Are we going to treat him like a chicken?“

Director of the enemy Explains the film’s twist
Thus these words refer to the turnaround presented in the film the enemy. Towards the end, we learn that, until now, the Junior we saw was actually his AI double and not the real one. Terence, a man who works for the government, reappears with several others to end the existence of this artificial junior. A scene that hurts my heart. Naked, lying on the ground, Junior is enveloped in pink light and covered in a strange liquid before being extinguished. “I wanted it to be disturbing, like a chicken factoryFake Junior’s death scene was explained to the director in detail. They skin him and kill him like an animal because he is not human. The brutal truth of that scene, because he’s not human, they think they can do whatever they want to him, was very powerful to me. From a directing standpoint, I really liked the idea that whenever the outside world shows its face, there’s a distinct difference. So, the green light led to his birth at the beginning of the film and the pink light marked his death.“

La Hen (Saoirse Ronan) which we see at the end the enemy with real junior (Paul Mescal) Really is a robot
After his robot is destroyed, we learn that the real Junior is older, more isolated, and emotionally closed off from his wife. She also resents Han for the time she spent with the AI, which was based on her younger personality. She really fell in love with him. “She wasn’t having an affair with a stranger, but she was meeting a version of her husband for the first time. One of the things I really like about this scene is that we see the real Junior looking at a version of himself lying dead on the ground. It’s almost like he looked back when he was free“, the director concluded. And if anyone ever wondered, at the end of the film, the chicken goes to explore the world, while the android takes place with the real Junior at home.
