“Mr. and Mrs. Smith”: Donald Glover and Maya Erskine replace Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie in stunning new mission

After an absence of nearly 20 years, Mr. and Mrs. Smith are finally back. Donald Glover and Maya Erskine succeed Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie in the television adaptation of the hit film for new adventures that are less sexy, but just as raucous and funny as ever.

Over the years, the legacy of Mr. and Mrs. Smith While the film itself has often been overshadowed in popular culture, the filming was the scene of the first romantic spark between Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. The rest we know: The actor broke up with Jennifer Aniston to build a full empire – kids, vineyard, lark! – with his hilarious co-star.

So we forget the base, which is extremely interesting. But its main points are now contained in the series, expected on Prime Video on Friday: two undercover agents are recruited by a mysterious spy agency to undertake a series of high-flying missions. But in between, they have to pretend to be a happily married couple, all of which is trivial… a task that will sometimes prove more dangerous than their assignments.

Updated concept

If the starting point of the series is the same as the film, we quickly get off the beaten track by Brangelina. Because it is more a question of the new departure we offer for the premise—English speakers will use the term here. Reboot – than a faithful re-reading. Both its approach and its casting greatly modernized the concept and its ins and outs, bringing together Donald Glover and Maya Erskine in the title roles.

The question on everyone’s lips: Is their chemistry as palpable as that of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie back in the day? No, apparently. But these two headliners Mr. and Mrs. Smith 2.0 performs particularly well, both in action scenes and in light scenes.

Spectacular

His new ventures may be confined to the small screen here, but they are by no means less spectacular than in 2005. A frantic chase, worthy of an intrusion into a social evening in the Big Apple or even Italy. Mission Impossible, thunderous explosions… eight episodes of less than an hour each have left us in awe. And these scenes are also sprinkled with a good dose of humor. The result: a series as breathless as it is ridiculous, which we greedily devour in a day.

In short, we’re already praying for another season. Because we have a strong impression that Mr. and Mrs. Smith have not yet completed their last mission.
