Prince Harry finally breaks his silence on the rumor that James Hewitt is his real father

Prince Harry has finally addressed long-running rumors that Commander James Hewitt is his real father.

It’s just one of many contentious topics the Duke of Sussex writes about in his new memoir ‘Spare’.

The royals have never openly discussed the theory about Harry’s paternity, which originated after it was revealed that Diana had a five-year relationship with Hewitt in the 1980s.

“…the rumor that was circulating at the time that my real father was one of my mother’s ex-lovers: Major James Hewitt,” Prince Harry writes in the leaked book. “One cause of the rumors was Major Hewitt’s red hair, but another was sadism.”

“Tabloid readers loved the idea that Prince Charles’s youngest son was not Prince Charles’s son. For some reason, they never got tired of that ‘joke.’”

The Duke of Sussex questions whether this rumor was used to paint him as a “laughing stock”, noting that it did not seem to matter that his mother had not met Commander Hewitt until “long after I was born”.

Throughout Harry’s life, the rumor has been repeated in various forms “with some seriousness,” he emphasizes.

Harry claims that sections of the media went so far as to “look for my DNA to prove it.” He noted that since Princess Diana had been “tortured” until she ended up in hiding, she believed that “they would be coming for me soon.”

Retired British Army Captain Hewitt wrote two books about his affair with Diana during her marriage to Prince Charles, and tried to sell the love letters he exchanged with the princess.

The couple met at a party in 1986, and Hewitt helped Diana overcome her fear of horseback riding as her instructor.

The former commander has addressed rumors surrounding Harry’s paternity, commenting in a 2002 interview with Sunday Mirror that “there really is no chance that I am Harry’s father…Harry was already walking when my relationship with Diana began”.

The book will officially go on sale in the UK next week.

In SpareThe Duke of Sussex remembers an occasion when Prince Charles jokingly questioned whether he was Harry’s father.

He claims that this joke was made “in poor taste” because of rumors circulating about Diana and Hewitt.

Elsewhere in the autobiography, Harry talks about losing his virginity to an older woman behind a pub, doing cocaine as a teenager “to feel different” and killing 25 people in Afghanistan.
