The coach of the Netherlands, Louis van Gaal, did not mince words: he acknowledged that his team “did not play a good game” this Friday against Ecuador and that they drew “against an opponent that was better” and deserved the victory.
“We didn’t play a good game. We lost all the duels, all the second balls were won by Ecuador”, assured the Dutch coach at the Khalifa International stadium, venue of the clash for the second date of Group A of the World Cup in Qatar-2022.
“We couldn’t win. Ecuador deserved to win,” said the 71-year-old veteran coach, despite the fact that the South Americans “didn’t have many chances,” although they “hit a shot off the crossbar” through Gonzalo Plata at minute 59, when the score was already 1 -1.
“I’m satisfied with the draw, but not with our performance,” added Van Gaal, who said that he “thought Ecuador would play at a very high level.”
“I warned that it would be stronger than Senegal”, against which the Netherlands debuted on Monday with a 2-0 victory with two goals in the final minutes, at 84 and in added time.
In this way, the Netherlands shares the top of Group A with Ecuador, both with four points, followed by Senegal with three and the already eliminated Qatar without units. On Tuesday, in the last date of the key, the Orange will face Qatar at the Al-Bayt stadium, in the city of Al Khor. (D)
