The US imposed million-dollar fines for canceled flights to Aeroméxico, Avianca and other airlines

Authorities from United States fined to six flight companies for not complying with the laws of that country regarding flight cancellations.

One of them was the company Aeromexico with a fine of 900 thousand Dollars because canceled flights. The Department of Transportation was the institution that ordered the fine.

Together with the Mexican company, they were also sanctioned Frontier Airlineswith a fine of 2.2 million dollars; Air Indiawith 1.4 million; TAP Portugalwith a fine of $900,000; the AI in the same way with 900 thousand dollars and Avianca with 750 thousand dollars.

The company Frontier Airlinesbased in Denver, was the one that received the higher fine while the fine the lowest was for Avianca. On the website of the Department of Transportation, both the fine and the required refunds are indicated, which amount to the following figures

Frontier Airlines with 222 million dollarsAIR India with 121.5 million, TAP Portugal with 126.5 million, Aeromexico with 13.6 millionEl Al with 61.9 million and Avianca with 76.8 million.

For his part, the Secretary of Transportation of the United States, Pete Buttigiegmade a commitment to reaffirm actions that support consumers through strict rules on refunds to travelers.

“When a flight is cancelled, passengers seeking refunds should receive payment immediately (…) When that does not happen, we will act to hold airlines accountable on behalf of US travelers and get passengers their money back. A flight cancellation is frustrating enough and you shouldn’t have to haggle or wait months for your refund.”

Under US law, companies must reimburse their customers if a flight is changed or canceled by the travel company. Pete Buttigieg pointed out that the companies violated the rules that seek to protect users

“In addition to the more than $600 million in refunds that airlines have returned, the Department announced today that it is evaluating more than $7.25 million in civil penalties against six airlines for extreme delays in providing refunds”, could be read in a statement shared by the United States Department of Transportation.

Through an official publication by said institution, it was reported that “theMost fines imposed will be collected in the form of payments to the Treasury Departmentand the rest will be credited on the basis of payments to passengers.

The announced fines are just one of the measures that have been carried out to protect consumers, other measures can be consulted on its official website.

It should be remembered that last August, Aeroméxico denied the statements made by Ricardo Sheffield, the head of the Federal Consumer Attorney’s Office (Profeco), about the fact that this is the one with the highest number of flight delays in the Mexico City International Airport (AICM).

The airline confirmed that from July to August it has operated approximately 29,000 flights, with a punctuality departure of 81.3% and arrival of 78.8%which implies that it is the most punctual company in the Benito Juárez terminal, this information was shared through a statement.
