Quirónsalud Infanta Luisa offers interviews on radio

The Radiophysics and Radiological Protection Service of the Quirónsalud Infanta Luisa Hospital in Sevillecoinciding with the celebration of the International Day of Medical Physics This Monday, November 7, launches a new information program for patients undergoing treatment for Radiotherapyavailable to those users who request it.

Radiophysicists are in charge of calculating and optimizing the doses produced by the radiation received by patients, both in the procedures used to diagnose diseases and in those others that allow them to be treated, guaranteeing a safe and efficient use of medical processes that use radiation. As pointed out by the person in charge of the Radiophysics Service of the Hospital Quirónsalud Infanta Luisa, Raphael Linaresthese types of meetings are already being held routinely with patients from the Nuclear Medicine Service undergoing treatment with radioactive iodine to cthyroid cancer and hyperthyroidism with “excellent results”.

In this case, it is about extending it to the patients of the Radiotherapy Service so that those who so wish can have a personal interview where they can acquire a greater knowledge of the technical details of their particular treatment. In this way, “it can contribute to greater adherence to treatment, as well as to banish false myths about radiation, providing a truthful information about the technical aspects of the radiotherapy process at the hands of the professionals indicated for it”, he underlines Beatrice Matthewalso a radiophysicist and head of Radiological Protection at the hospital.

And it is precisely in Radiotherapy, implicated in approximately 65 percent of cancer treatments exclusively or in combination with surgery and/or chemotherapy, is one of the fields in which the use of ionizing radiation has advanced the most in recent years, largely thanks to the research work of radiophysicists, which has resulted in an unprecedented increase in the quality and safety with which treatments are administered. In this sense, Linares highlights that “the current trend is the reduction in the number of sessions and the increase in the radiation dose given in each session, thanks to the evolution in machinery -linear accelerators- and progress in the ability to calculate the dose with a previously unimaginable precision”.

Greater comfort and effectiveness

According to the specialist, “it has gone from treating breast cancer in 25 sessions to doing it in 15 and, in selected cases, even in five sessions; in prostate, from the old schemes of 38-40 sessions, it has gone to hypofractionations of 20 sessions, and in some cases others of 5-6 sessions can be considered, with the advantage of a increased comfort for patients, in addition to the greater effectiveness. In some lung tumors, traditionally ineffective treatments of around 30 sessions have evolved to only three, achieving in many cases a effect comparable to surgery in terms of survival and local controlalso reducing side effects.

Although radiotherapy is a remarkable area, in general, it would be almost impossible to conceive of current medicine without the work of radiophysicists and the use of radiation, since these are used routinely to diagnose, stage or follow the evolution of practically any pathological process. Such is the case of the equipment used in hemodynamics for the placement of stents, the surgical arches (ray equipment) that are used in almost any intervention so that the surgeon can have a instant image of the interior of the zone of interest, the staging of tumors through the use of PET-CT or the extension studies in oncological cases that are carried out in Nuclear medicineamong other applications.
