Damna Gvasalia, creative director of the Spanish brand, used the clover and the three Adidas stripes to design a capsule that did not go unnoticed and that, without a doubt, was completely different from all those presented so far this year.
Abandoning the typical haute couture events, with glamorous catwalks, lights and glitter, this time Balenciaga’s Spring 2023 show was held on Wall Street, New York. The show was divided into three parts and was attended by several well-known figures, including: Kanye West, Megan Thee Stallion and Pharrell Williams.
I start with the presentation of the “Garde-Robe” or as Damna himself calls “luxury classic garments”. The designer commented that he was inspired by the relaunch of the previous collection based on tailoring. “I realized that we were missing this segment of the classic wardrobe,” he explained.
The second part exhibited nightwear, body-hugging dresses, other looser, bright and vibrant ones, oversize suits with giant shoulder pads also stood out.
The impression of these designs is like a combination of three decades (80-90-2000) and futuristic and technological elements that were reinforced with all the screens in the room collapsed and the music, but without a doubt, what left the most impression on everyone attendees was to see the models in latex suits.
They all paraded the Spring 2023 collection with latex masks of different colors, in reference to sadomasochism (BDSM as it is more specifically known) of the fashion industry and as a critique of the loss of identity as a result of globalization.
The last part of the parade, and the most anticipated, was the collaboration with Adidas. “Inspired by the late ’90s and early 2000s, the inaugural collection will house a variety of men’s and women’s apparel, accessories and footwear,” Adidas said in its press release.
At first glance the first thing we can notice are the XXL garments and the different colors that the designer chose to merge the brands. The collection includes everything from tights to leather jackets, as well as jeans (very 90s) with the three Adidas stripes, the classic hoddies, tracksuits and even sports t-shirts.
But without a doubt, the great star of the night and the snikerheads’ obsession was the Balenciaga Triple S: a silhouette with the three stripes and the Adidas clover without neglecting the name of its brand, the same as the Speed, with its particular sock design.
