UN and UNESCO condemn the murder of Heber López in Oaxaca and vulnerability of the journalistic exercise

Juchitán de Zaragoza.–The United Nations Organization (UN) through international organizations of the unesco and the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (UN-DH) condemned the murder of journalist Heber Lopez Vasquezoccurred in Salina Cruz last February 10.

Heber López was assassinated inside his office by two subjects in the port of Salina Cruz, who tried to escape but were killed. arrested.

The Director General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco), Audrey Azoulayasked the Mexican authorities to bring the murderers of journalist Heber López Vásquez before the Justice.

“I ask the authorities to investigate this crime and bring its perpetrators to justice,” he said in a statement.

For his part, Jesús Peña, Deputy Representative of the UN-DH in Mexico, pointed out that the murder of Heber López highlights the vulnerability of those who exercise journalistic activity away from the larger urban centers.

“It is essential that authorities and society support the essential journalistic activity that allows all people to have access to plural information,” he said.

The UN – DH indicated that the information made public by the authorities in relation to the detention of two people for their possible relationship with the events may be an important advance for their clarification.

The UN-DH called for the investigation to be carried out with the highest standards of due diligence, which implies exhausting all lines of investigation, including the link between this attack and the journalistic activity of Heber López, and determining the material authors and intellectuals and the motives of these facts.

The UN-DH has documented four murders of journalists and a collaborator of a media outlet in 2022, in which the attacks could derive from or be related to journalistic activity and the conditions in which the victims exercised it.

During 2021 the UN-DH documented at least eight murders Y two disappearances of journalistsas well as the murder of two security guards who guarded the facilities of a communication group that could derive from or be related to journalistic activity and the conditions in which they exercise it.
