Iron Man star returns as villain: new role for Robert Downey Jr.

Thanks to his “Iron Man” role, he is now one of the most famous actors in the world: Robert Downey Jr. has played the Marvel superhero for over a decade. After leaving “Avengers: Endgame” it was rather quiet around him. His only role since then was in “The Fantastic Voyage of Dr. Dolittle”, a children’s film that didn’t go over well with anyone.

Now it’s clear what he’s going to do next. He’s taking on a part in a series produced by HBO. It will be his first TV role since playing a supporting character on the fourth season of the lawyer series “Ally McBeal” in 2002. His new series is based on the novel “The Sympathizer” by Vietnamese author Viet Thanh Nguyen, who won a Pulitzer Prize for the novel in 2016. And what’s really special: Downey Jr. will be seen in several roles.

Coming soon on HBO: The Many Faces of Robert Downey Jr.

The novel, which HBO plans to film as a series, is a satirical spy thriller set towards the end of the Vietnam War and is about a North Vietnamese mole in the South Vietnamese army who later goes into exile in the United States and is filming one there in Hollywood War film participates as a consultant. “The Sympathizer” was highly praised as a book and should be an absolute prestige project for HBO.

Robert Downey Jr. is said to be one of the main characters in the series and appears in many roles. For example, he will work as a Californian congressman, but also as a CIA agent and in a few other parts. It is particularly challenging for him that all these characters are unsympathetic, villains who hinder the nameless hero on his way. Perhaps his appearance in the end will be somewhat reminiscent of Tom Cruise as the eccentric adversary in the film satire “Tropic Thunder”, in which Downey Jr. was also seen.

With this, Downey Jr. is actively returning to television for the first time since he made the great cinema career after “Ally McBeal”. Whereby … at least in 2005 he had a speaking role in an episode of the TV series “Family Guy”, which is probably one of the bizarre engagements of his career. “The Sympathizer” can presumably be a completely different caliber.
