The first part of “Mission Impossible” grossed more than 450 million US dollars worldwide. Exactly 25 years ago today, the action film about Agent Ethan Hunt also fascinated German moviegoers. On August 7, 1996, the film with Tom Cruise in the leading role flickered across the screens in Germany.
The Hollywood star broke a record with the film. With “Mission Impossible” the actor had made five films in succession, each of which grossed more than 100 million US dollars in the USA.
Grande dame of the canvas
But not only Tom Cruise caused enthusiasm in “Mission Impossible”, but also supporting roles such as Jon Voight, Vanessa Redgrave and Emmanuelle Béart. The latter shone above all with its French charm. As Claire Phelps, she helps Ethan Hunt uncover a CIA mole in the film.

Emmanuelle Béart was 32 years old at the time and not a stranger. She became famous five years earlier as a nude model in “The Beautiful Troublemaker”. At the Cannes Film Festival she was presented with the Grand Jury Prize. In the mid-1990s, the Frenchwoman was celebrated as the new grande dame of the screen after Catherine Deneuve, Jeanne Moreau and Fanny Ardant.

Unlike in the film, the actress wears her hair blonde again and much shorter. Time seems to have passed her by without a trace. The former movie star hardly looks a day older. The subject of plastic surgery is not a taboo for her. “You never know, especially in my job as an actress,” she once said in an interview.
Due to a lack of self-confidence, she had her lips injected. “The operation was totally botched,” she confessed years later in an interview with “Le Monde”. “If I had liked my mouth, I wouldn’t have let it be done.”
