Selena Gomez finds kidney joke tasteless

In the fourth episode of the fifth season of The Good Fight, the name Selena Gomez was dropped. The young actress, known from “The Wizards of Waverly Place” and Only Murders In the Building, was mentioned for her 2017 kidney transplant, which became necessary due to her lupus disease diagnosed in 2011.

Specifically, it is about the following scene in the political lawyer drama: The producer of a comedy show, played by Wayne Brady, asks Liz (Audra McDonald) to write a guide for young comedians on which jokes they should rather avoid for reasons of sensitivity. In the group, Marissa (Sarah Steele), Jay (Nyambi Nyambi) and Jim (Ifadansi Rashad) later discuss examples of incorrect gags and the so-called Cancel Culture general.

Taboo topics include necrophilia, autism and Selena Gomez’s kidney transplant. Probably an allusion to the fact that the Peacock series Saved by the Bell (2020) has recently been criticized after it has made a joke at the expense of the actress. As an excuse, money was later sent to the Selena Gomez Find and to a USC lupus research project.

What Selena Gomez says

The actress has become aware of The Good Fight episode after her fans made calls such as “Respect Selena Gomez” tweeted. Finally, she herself wrote: “I’m not sure how it came about that jokes about organ transplants in TV series have become a thing, but unfortunately it is apparently. I hope that such tasteless jokes will be stopped immediately in the next author’s room and not go on air.

THR Meanwhile, an anonymous source involved in the production of the criticized series quotes: “If you watch the episode in full, the reference to Gomez is part of a discussion that the characters have about topics you can’t make fun of, and the idea of cancel culture and being canceled because of a bad joke. The hint is that you can’t make jokes about their transplant. In other words, it wasn’t a joke about Gomez, but rather a statement that you shouldn’t make fun of her health.

Whether Gomez will withdraw her accusation if this clarification is brought to her remains to be seen. Perhaps an agreement will be made by making another donation to their organization. The Good Fight was recently renewed on Paramount+ for season six…
