Why you should be wary of this pen

Every year, exactly 40 days after Christmas, i.e. on February 2, young and old enjoy pancakes on a candlelit occasion. But, for this moment to happen in complete safety, it is recommended to choose harmless accessories. Recently, the International Agency for Research on Cancer has classified PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid – used in the production of Teflon) as a carcinogen.

PFAS (Of which PFOA is a subfamily, editor’s note.) Persistent, bioaccumulative and very difficult to remove, hence their name “perpetual pollutants”. They have been accumulating in the environment and in fact in our bodies for over 70 years, mainly through the food and water we ingest, but also through the air and dust we breathe.“, warns the UFC.

Rules are respected but…

To help consumers make the right choice, UFC-Que Choisir searched for pens with the least PFAS in a selection of Teflon models from different brands (De Buyer, Cristel, Tefal, Beka, Carrefour, E .Leclerc, Ikea, Lidl). . In total, the UFC found 70 PFAS in 8 pens with a Teflon or PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) coating. All samples were taken from the coating in fresh condition, after heating at high temperature for 10 minutes.

According to the results of this comparison, the eight stoves tested comply with the regulations in force. However, the levels vary depending on the model. Thus, Tefal Ingenio is one with the highest (11). “The Beka and De Buyer references come last in our test because they contain at least one PFAS suspected of being hazardous. PFBS (perfluorobutanesulfonic acid) for the first and PFHXA (perfluorohexanoic acid) for the second.“, UFC reports.

The results? Becca pan exceeds the threshold of 100 parts per billion (ppb). It also contains at least one dangerous PFAS and therefore receives a “weak” rating. Same conclusion for D-buying pens that also contain dangerous PFAS. In this ranking, none of the pens received three stars because traces of PFAS were found in each of them. The first place is occupied by the homeside model of E.Leclerc because it has the least.
