Why fall for this PS5 remaster
For almost fifteen years, the American studio Naughty Dog has been based on two flagship licenses: Uncharted and The Last of Us. In September 2022, the studio initially offered a complete remake of the first opus of The Last of Us saga. was launched in 2013. A masterful overhaul from a strictly technical point of view, which however suffers from its selling price (€79), which is unreasonable in the eyes of some players, not to mention the obvious “remake” aspect, but not very obvious. for everyone. Earlier in the year, its sequel, The Last of Us Part 2, is coming to PS5.

The Last of Us Part 2 PS5, not a remake this time, but a remaster
Indeed, if the game launched in 2020 on PlayStation 4 has already been optimized on PS5, Sony has chosen to offer a new dedicated version benefiting from various technical adjustments with the added bonus of some new features. Unlike The Last of Us Part 1, this new PS5 adaptation is a “remaster”. So not a complete overhaul, but a boosted version, and this time displayed at a much lower price.
From a strictly pricing point of view, The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered is offered at €49.99 for those who wish to purchase the game, either in physical or digital version. But! Those who already own the game on PS4 can take advantage of a PS5 upgrade for €10. As you may have understood, unless you want the game on PS5 because of acute collecting, you can get the game on PS4 for a ridiculous price, before adding 10€ to take advantage of the PS5 remaster.
So, what will we get when we launch The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered on PS5? This is the “definite” version of the original game, which primarily takes advantage of the PS5 to offer new 4K video rendering. The whole thing is grittier, more pleasing to the eye, but don’t expect any sort of overhaul like the first opus. However, The Last of Us Part 2 was already a huge graphic slap in the face in 2020, and the game is still quite outstanding today.
For PS5 optimization, we’ll also mention optimized loadings (“Magic SSD” yes), but also full support for the DualSense controller. At this level, the game also offers a fairly impressive range of customizations, with 100% customizable “feels”.
New game modes
Better visual appearance, optimized loading and DualSense compatibility… is that all? Well no, because The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered also comes with new game modes like “No Return” and “Lost Level” cheat mode.
As for “sans return”, it’s a new game mode, without the slightest multiplayer dimension. We choose a character, and we start in a series of random fights. Encounters in iconic locations from the history of The Last of Us Part II put us face-to-face with different enemies, all punctuated by boss battles. At the end of each level, you can improve your skills and strengthen your weapons, but every death will be final.
A roguelike game mode similar to that recently offered by God of War Ragnarok. Offered by a simple update, Valhalla also shines with a more elaborate background (with new parts) but also a realistic description… in addition to its free. Let’s be clear, as cool as it is, the “No Return” mode is in no way worthy of God of War Ragnarok’s Valhalla mode. Nice then, but in our eyes this isn’t enough to encourage a purchase of The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered.
Another innovation brought by this new version: “Lost Level”. Three in number, these are the game levels of reality that were ultimately “Cut during editing” This allows you to play new sequences (at the alpha stage) such as the sewers, Jackson’s party and wild boar hunting, with the possibility of benefiting from audio comments from the developers.
The offered levels are relatively short, they do not bring anything fundamentally revolutionary, but still allow you to appreciate certain new sequences with the added bonus of stimulating comments, which allow you to discover more about the game design about this or that element of the gameplay. . … So exciting, but rather brief, as it will take less than an hour to complete. It’s hard to hide the fact that we would have preferred to be able to find an actual director’s cut version of the game integrated with new levels in the main story, but that’s as it should be.
Finally, among the new features of The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered, we find the “Free Guitar” mode, which allows everyone to express their guitar skills by rubbing the touchpad of DualSense. You can modify the character on the screen, change the background, choose different instruments… It’s done very well, no doubt the most creative/music lovers will manage to replay the most popular songs. , but again, it is impossible. Make some kind of sales pitch.
What if this was remastered to TLOU 2’s greatest strength… definitely TLOU 2?
But this is the greatest strength of The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered… The Last of Us Part 2. Indeed, the game is even better looking than when it was released in 2020, with its side “The next generation” Hours ago.
There are many exquisite environments, not to mention stunning animations, incredible details, very elaborate lighting and camera effects… In short, “only” €10, we get our eyes (and hands) full (again) after four years, and we also benefit from some brief, but still interesting, bonuses.
Of course, the adventure is still very divisive, with extreme violence and a game that confronts us with absolutely shocking choices, but what a video game performance on the part of Naughty Dog.
We can criticize its gameplay, its staging, certain choices of scenery, the fact that for those who haven’t played the game yet, this PS5 version, The Last of Us Part 2, is the best way to discover (and sometimes pass). An experience that captures courage like never before.

Our take on The Last of Us Part 2 is recapped
Unlike The Last of Us Part 1, this re-release of the second opus is not a remake, but a remastered one. The game is therefore similar to the PS4 version (an even better one), but with various optimizations on the loading side and DualSense. It adds a couple of new features (“No Return”, “The Lost Level”) that are interesting to explore, even if they aren’t a compelling reason to buy. In the end, the real strength of The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered is simply TLOU 2, and this possibility for newcomers (especially those licensed by the TV series) to discover the game in its best light.

we love
- All the qualities of the original game

- DualSense is well used
- Nice new features (but not essential)
- Plenty behind the scenes
We like less
- Also a few bugs from the original game
- A real director’s cut version would be perfect
- No return mode, wow…
