Where do people with the longest life expectancy live? To answer this question, Belgian demographer Michel Poulin identified five blue zones in the world, about twenty years ago. In Costa Rica, on the Nicoya Peninsula, or even in Japan, on the island of Okinawa, non-agenarians and centenarians are more numerous than elsewhere.

“They drink a lot of water”

“They don’t realize that it’s their diet, their lifestyle, that’s brought them to their old age,” Chloe, a naturopathy student, explained to RTBF. As part of her dissertation, the young woman traveled to the Nicoya Peninsula and spoke to the elderly people who lived there. She was able to see that their longevity depends on many factors: “It is mainly due to the environment and the lifestyle of the people living there. Lifestyle includes diet, psycho-social hygiene, exercise, movement…”

Apparently, the longevity of the inhabitants of the blue zone is not only in the diet, but their way of eating, local and balanced, can only do you good. But above all, the pillar that keeps them in shape on a daily basis is diet. Older people living in the blue zone consume local produce and sometimes eat unprocessed food from their own land. “People will eat mainly fruits and vegetables, pick things from their gardens, buy things from the market… They will drink a lot of water, even lemon water. They will always make a mixture so that we will get (in their recipes; editor’s note) all the essential amino acids, lots of All the fiber and minerals, antioxidants”, explains Chloe.

“Younger generations are not so interested in food”

Unfortunately, this type of lifestyle is becoming extinct, especially due to globalization, which has seeded hypermarkets, fast food restaurants and processed foods in all four corners of the world. “They don’t realize that their children and their grandchildren don’t live like them and don’t eat the same things as them,” explains Chloe, who adds: “The younger generations are not that interested in food, they don’t eat. Understand that the way they speak, Movement, will affect their future health, unfortunately the youth of today are not aware of the impact this will have on tomorrow.
