Stimulus checks for seniors and disabled people: How to get $1,000

The application process for stimulus checks in Pennsylvania will begin soon. Eligible residents can receive up to a $1,000 discount thanks to an expanded discount program approved by Governor Josh Shapiro.

In 2023, Governor Shapiro green-lighted this state stimulus program, offering Pennsylvanians property tax relief and rent reimbursements. Applications for additional money can be submitted from January 2024.

Eligible Pennsylvania residents will receive an extended refund of up to $1,000 on property taxes and rent. Although the program existed in previous years, it has been rebranded for 2024 as the “Expanded Rebate Program” to make it more accessible to more Pennsylvanians.

The new law, known as “Act 7 of 2023,” represents the largest tax cut for seniors in nearly two decades, according to the state government. A previous version of the program offered up to $650 per eligible resident. On this occasion, up to $1,000 is available per eligible individual until 2024.

In this new legislature, the income limits for renters and homeowners were also changed, which meant that more Pennsylvania residents could take advantage of these tax discounts. This means that tenants and landlords with an annual income of up to $45,000 will be able to receive this reduction or financial relief.

The expansion of the program aims to help an additional 175,000 Pennsylvanians, joining the 430,000 recipients who have already experienced relief, and will receive more refunds through 2024.

The Pennsylvania Department of Revenue will accept applications beginning in mid-January 2024. The rebate will apply to all property and rental taxes paid in 2023, the ValueWalk website reports.

This support is only for adults above 65 years of age, widows and widowers above 50 years of age or disabled persons above 18 years of age.
