The suffering of little Hind Rajab in Gaza shook the whole world. In recordings released by the Palestinian Red Crescent, a 6-year-old girl cries for help. She is alone in the passenger compartment of a car, Monday 29 January, surrounded by the remains of six members of her family. For more than three hours, she faced Israeli tanks that reportedly opened fire. On February 10, the little girl was found dead south of Gaza City, by her relatives and two paramedics who went to help her.

The first call came from Hind’s cousin, 15-year-old Layan Hamada, on Monday 29 January, to the Red Crescent in Ramallah, in the official West Bank, where franceinfo was able to go. The answer is Omar. On the other end of the line, he heard shots and saw the teenager die. I was in dissociation, as if my mind had left my body, I couldn’t understand what I had just seen.Says the volunteer. He then tries to regain his senses and resumes the call. This time it is Hind who talks to him. For about ten minutes, “She was able to convince me Who was around him in the car”, recalls Omar. When he realizes that the little girl is surrounded by six remains in the car, he doesn’t believe it “Can’t Go On Anymore” and asks his colleague Rana “Take it”.

“They are all sleeping.”

The exchange will last for three hours. There is Hind’s panicked voice and then Rana’s who does his best to reassure him, but “Honest sound and occasional shots”Red Crescent Operator explains. Imagine the scene, a little girl in a car full of dead bodies.”He says that he was with the little girl during her last hours. “Sometimes she told me ‘They’re all sleeping’. and at other times, ‘They’re all dead, there’s blood everywhere, there’s gunfire’She reports.

“Even a grown man can’t deal with such a situation, put yourself in Hind’s shoes!”

The scene is terrifying. And yet the Rana maintains his composure until daylight begins to break. Hind calls for help. “His voice was full of sadness and distress”, recalls the operator. Then the little girl tells him that she is afraid of the dark. “She asked me to promise I’d get her out of there.”she explains.

Two rescuers died

” she said ‘How soon will you be there?’ I replied ‘one hour’. Finally, an hour and a half passed and we still hadn’t sent anyone. she insisted ‘You told me you’d be there in an hour! where are you ?’Rana says. The operator explains that coordinating with Israel takes time. The little girl asks what “integration” means. “I have been working in rescue and first aid for 13 years, I have never been so affected”Rana takes a breath.

Finally, the Red Crescent receives “green light” of the Israeli army “To send an ambulance to where Hind was.”Rana explains. “We were still online with him and in contact with our rescuers. And suddenly, we heard shots.”She said that. “We would never have thought it was an ambulance that was targeted, it was almost at Hind level”She continues.

Shortly before 6 p.m., the conversation between the girl and the rescuer was interrupted. Two ambulances sent by the Red Crescent never arrived. “We have had no news for twelve days”, laments Rana. Behind the operator’s desk, there are now three photos. That of Hind, surrounded by the faces of two men, Yusef and Ahmed. They died the same day, 100 meters away from the car the little girl was in. He was the last Red Crescent rescuer to save lives in northern Gaza. NGOs have accused the Israeli army of targeting ambulance workers.
