French European champion Benoit Councaud suspected of attempted rape, investigation launched

Arrested on Tuesday morning, the French handball player was taken into police custody before an investigation began.

Less than 48 hours after being crowned European champions with the French handball team in Cologne (Germany), right winger Benoît Cauncaud is suspected of attempted rape in a Parisian nightclub on Monday to Tuesday night.

The 26-year-old player was taken into custody at the premises of the 1st Judicial Police District (DPJ) between Monday and Tuesday night, we learned from a source close to the case on Wednesday.

The Paris prosecutor’s office confirmed “A French handball player has been in police custody at the premises of the 1st Judicial Police District since the early hours of January 30”.

“A woman born in March 2003 accused him of attempted rape during an alcoholic evening at a nightclub in the 8th arrondissement”.The prosecution added.

It was not immediately possible to know Benoît Councoud’s position on the facts.

“FFHandball is not in a position to comment on the matter at this stage, and remains attentive to the follow-up provided by the judicial authorities”A press release from the French Handball Federation indicated for its part.

She “Reaffirms its determination to fight all forms of violence, (…) strongly condemns such acts, when they occur and regardless of the person involved (…)”Federation which added “Renewing its support for all victims of violence”.

Monday at the Elysee

For its part, Polish club Kielce, where Kouncoud plays, announced that it had taken “Take the matter seriously and condemn any behavior that violates the rules of social life”.
