Big win for Epic Games: Fortnite will finally return to iOS devices, but only in Europe.
Fortnite is back on iOS
When we thought we’d never see each other again Fortnite On Apple devices, Epic Games is gearing up to make a return to the game iOS. The announcement follows new European Union directives that force the Apple firm to open up its operating system to third-party applications.
As a reminder, Apple and Epic Games entered into conflict in 2020 when the studio decided to violate the firm’s rules regarding payment. Apple then took a 30% share of all transactions made on its devices, a rule that Epic Games tried to circumvent by redirecting players to its official website. So, Apple decided to ban Fortnite from the App Store last summer.

An outing during the year
That was before the European Union came on the scene. With the Digital Markets Act, the EU is forcing Apple to open up its operating system to all third-party applications. Fortnite has been banned from the App Store, but Epic Games has announced the upcoming arrival of the Epic Games Store to iOS. The studio only promises a European release “later this year”.

So this is great news for Apple players, but also for all iOS users who wanted to import various apps to their devices. With the Digital Markets Act, Google, for example, will be able to offer a full version of its flagship search engine, Google Chrome. However, it remains to be seen how DMA can affect the security of iOS devices.
