Fortnite on iPhone will make its big return after a 4-year absence

The never-ending feud between Epic Games and Apple over App Store user fees has taken a surprising turn with Apple’s recent changes to its policies in the European Union.

Fortnite is finally coming back to iOS

To comply with the European Union’s Digital Markets Act, Apple will now allow sideloading, allowing iPhone owners to install apps outside of the App Store. Epic Games Studios will take the opportunity to reintroduce Fortnite to iOS, but this time through its own platform, the Epic Games Store.

As a reminder, Apple banned Fortnite from iPhone in summer 2020 after Epic Games tried to circumvent the 30% tax imposed by Apple. The publisher then took legal action against the Apple firm, accusing the latter of anti-competitive practices in the area of distribution of applications and associated payments.

After suffering several setbacks, we can say that the publisher has finally won its case with the announced overhaul of the App Store in the EU, although it reveals that Apple is not entirely satisfied with the way it will enforce its DMA compliance.

In any case, this is good news for European gamers who own an iPhone. Epic Games has yet to announce an exact date for Fortnite’s return to iOS, but it is expected sometime this year.
