Disney paid $1.5 billion to Epic Games to create the Fortnite games and universe. –

Fortnite is such a huge success that it’s easy to forget that many companies own shares of publisher and developer Epic Games. This is one of the reasons why the game has achieved incredible collaborations over the years with huge franchises and brands like Lego, Marvel and Star Wars. But that is nothing compared to what is certain now.

Disney announced that it was investing US$1.5 billion in an equity stake in Epic Games, and it made it very clear why. “Collaborating on a whole new universe of games and entertainment that will further expand the reach of Disney’s beloved stories and experiences.”

This doesn’t mean we’ll stop seeing Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, Star Wars Outlaws, Marvel’s Blade or other games in the Disney universe from companies like PlayStation Studios, Xbox Game Studios, Square Enix. Firaxis, because Disney CEO Robert A. Iger’s statement gives the impression that the collaboration between Disney and Epic is primarily focused on Fortnite:

“Our exciting new relationship with Epic Games will bring together Disney’s beloved brands and franchises with the wildly popular Fortnite in a transformative new world of gaming and entertainment.”

Does this mean these epic titles will be more like Lego Fortnite than Marvel’s Spider-Man et al? Time will tell, but if/when this deal is approved, expect to see many more avatars, Donald Duck, Indiana Jones, Marvel, Pixar, Star Wars, The Simpsons in Epic Games and Unreal Engine titles.

What do you think of this “Metaverse 2.0” or Disney Infinity 4?
