Controversial House of Representatives bill that seeks to deport immigrants who drive drunk or under the influence of drugs
Measure HR 6976, called the Safer Our Communities from DUI Offenders Act, was approved with 274 votes in favor, mostly from Republican lawmakers, and 150 votes against.
The bill still has to be approved by the Senate, where the majority is Democrats, and its future is uncertain.
The legislation seeks to amend the Immigration and Nationality Act “to make inadmissible and deportable aliens who have been convicted of, or who have committed an offense of driving while intoxicated or under the influence of alcohol,” the House document says.
The measure was proposed by Alabama Representative Barry Moore, a Republican.
Rap. Rashida Tlaib said in a statement that she opposes HR 6976 because “it would mean that our immigrant neighbors who came here legally and have lived in our communities for decades will be deported from their families because of convictions and have will be demolished.” A petty crime, creating a separate and unequal justice system.”
