A simple update sprinkled with price cuts?
The RTX 4070 Ti Super was shaping up to be a worthy successor to the RTX 4080, especially thanks to the increase in VRAM. But is she really over it?
It is to refresh its RTX 40 series of graphics cards that Nvidia marketed the RTX 4070 Ti Super. As a reminder, this is the second super model released this year, the RTX 4070 Super started the dance on January 17. The ball will drop today with the arrival of the 4080 Super announced by Nvidia during CES 2024.
GeForce RTX 4070 Ti vs 4070 Ti Super
As with previous Supers, the technical differences are once again small. We mainly look for a change in VRAM, so increasing the card from 12 to 16 GB.
Model | RTX 4070 Ti | RTX 4070 Ti Super |
CUDA heart | is 7680 | 8448 |
Video memory | 12GB GDDR6X | 16 GB GDDR6X |
base frequency | 2310 MHz | 2340 MHz |
Increase frequency | 2610 MHz | 2610 MHz |
Memory frequency | 1313MHz, 21Gbps | 1313MHz, 21Gbps |
bandwidth | 504.2 GB/s | 672.3 GB/s |
Consumption | 285W | 285W |
Publication date | January 5, 2023 | January 24, 2024 |
Important information to note, the technical differences of the RTX 4070 Ti Super did not increase the consumption unlike the previously released RTX 4070 Super.
An amendment… doesn’t exist?
In terms of card performance, TechSpot’s tests show that this second super offers no real advantage over average 12 games. Indeed, the difference is of the order of 4 FPS on average, representing a 3% increase in 1440p and a 6% increase in 4K. Not much to say…
If we look in more detail at the Alan Wake 2 for example, the difference is even less than before. The increase in VRAM didn’t seem to bring any real benefit even at resolutions as high as 4K. We observe a difference of 3% in 1440p and 5% in 4K, which represents 2 FPS more for the Super version. It is interesting to note that the RTX 4070 Ti and RTX 4080 are very close, and the Super version narrows the gap from 26% to 19% in 4K.
Specifically, the gap between the Super version and the RTX 4080 narrows even further on The Last of Us, a game known to be greedy in VRAM. At 1440p, the difference is only 9 FPS, which puts the RTX 4070 Ti Super on the same level as the RX 7900 XT. In 4K, the difference is 7 FPS, which puts the RTX 4070 Ti Super slightly below the RX 7900 XT.
Now let’s see if the card, which hasn’t impressed us so far, does better with ray tracing enabled. In an average of 12 games, the RTX 4070 Ti Super is 4% higher than its non-Super version and 17% lower than the RTX 4080. Note that, it’s 27% more efficient than the RX 7900 XT, AMD claims. Still didn’t fail to handle games effectively with ray tracing enabled.
Consumption
On the other hand, consumption is interesting. This is a lesser evil given the previous performance gains, as the RTX 4070 Ti Super maintains the same power consumption as its non-Super version. This represents the total consumption of our TechSpot colleagues’ test PC, a maximum of 403 watts, knowing that the card is advertised at a TDP of 285 watts.
RTX 4070 Super: The best evolution of the Super series?
The RTX 4070 Super is, for the moment, the best super graphics card in the RTX 40 series. Indeed, the results obtained and analyzed in this article show a timid, if non-existent, evolution compared to the RTX 4070 Ti Super and its non-Super counterpart. On an average of 12 similar games, the RTX 4070 Super offered a 19% advantage, while the RTX 4070 Ti Super showed only a 3% improvement over the non-Super version.
It is still necessary to underline that the biggest strong point of this Super version is elsewhere: it is its price. Unlike the RTX 4070 Super, this new card does not see a price increase compared to its non-Super version. This allows you to find the RTX 4070 Ti from €889 compared to €939 at some retailers. However, is this reason enough to change? Nothing is less certain.
Above all, it’s legitimate to wonder if Nvidia hasn’t restricted further evolution to maintain the range effect and top the RTX 4080. Even today, the latter sells very little compared to the RTX 4070 and RTX 4090.
