A former UN weapons inspector has warned that Iran will have enough uranium to build 12 nuclear bombs in just five months, as fears grow over the possibility of a third world war.

David Albright, an American physicist and weapons expert, said the rogue state’s uranium enrichment was “just shy of 90 percent”, the most desired level for building a nuclear bomb. The chilling claim came as Joe Biden announced that three US soldiers had been killed and “several” injured in a drone attack by an Iranian-backed militia in Jordan.

They were the first American deaths in months of attacks on American forces across the Middle East by Iranian-backed militias amid the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, adding to the growing threat.

Albright said it is now an “unfortunate reality” that Iranian scientists already have the knowledge to build an apocalyptic weapon. And he revealed that the state could have enough radioactive material in a month for six weapons. While five months later, he mentioned that this could be doubled.

In a report published on the Institute for Science and International Security, Albright said: “The unfortunate reality is that Iran already knows how to build nuclear weapons, although there is some work to be done to actually build them.

“Today, it would take only a week to produce enough for its first nuclear weapons. You could have enough weapons-grade uranium for six in one month, and after five months of producing weapons-grade uranium, you would have enough for twelve.
