Will Subnautica 2 be a service game like Fortnite? The studio responds

Gamers around the world agree with that Subnautica One of the most immersive and incredible indie games in video game history. That’s why its sequel is highly anticipated, and its development has been scrutinized from all angles. Unfortunately, Krafron has caused a bit of chaos with its latest financial report. The publisher of the title has in fact declared it Subnautica 2 There will be a “service game”.. It didn’t take long for fans to revolt.

What is a service game?

A service game is often a multiplayer, online game, the objective of which is to survive over time. Often free, but not always, they feature an economic model based on battle passes, microtransactions, or seasonal systems to generate revenue throughout the game’s lifetime. Some examples of styles would be: Fortnite, Call of Duty, Overwatch, World of Warcraft, Street Fighter, etc

It’s an economic model with a particularly bad reputation in the world of video games, especially when it affects games with a strong narrative, usually focused on a solo adventure. However, it seems that things are not that simple. After the publisher’s comments, it’s the turn of Unknown Worlds development studio to clarify the situation. In a press release on his site, he announced:

While some of this news is exciting, we want to clarify things (…) For “games as a service”, we plan to update the game for several years, just like the previous two Opus Subnautica. Think of this as our Early Access update model, but expanded. There will be no season pass, no battle pass and no subscriptions

false alarm

Words are meant to reassure. Ultimately, there’s nothing to worry about other than a few content updates, regular enough so that the title doesn’t die after a few months. This is an increasingly classic strategy for adventure games. The studio also makes it clear that there will be no No mandatory multiplayer. There will be a two-player co-op mode, but only as a couple to share the adventure.

For publication date, Subnautica 2 Early Access will not publish this year…or at least not officially. The Unknown World promises to come back with more information on this topic in a few weeks/months.
