Miami-Dade police confirmed the deaths of two three-year-old twin brothers after a medical emergency was reported on a section of the northbound I-95 freeway connecting to the turnpike early Friday morning.

According to police, the incident happened shortly after 2 a.m. when 911 operators received a call about an unresponsive child.

After that, the police received a call about another child in the same condition. The calls may have been made by a person traveling in another vehicle.

When police arrived at the scene, they saw a woman, confirmed to be the driver of the vehicle with the children inside, jump off the ramp onto the Tri-Rail train tracks.

The woman was taken to Aventura Hospital in critical condition, officials said.

According to reports, the children were taken to an area hospital where they were later pronounced dead.

“Officers arrived on scene and an adult female had jumped off the freeway,” said Miami-Dade Police Detective Angel Rodriguez.

The woman fell on the train line and was taken to Aventura Hospital in critical condition. The minors were inside the vehicle: a Toyota Highlander.

“The children were found unconscious and were rushed to the hospital in a critical condition, apparently despite medical efforts these children died at the hospital. At this time we are unable to determine the cause of death of the children. That will be determined by the medical examiner’s office,” Rodriguez added.

Authorities are currently trying to determine the circumstances that led to the crash.

The incident occurred in the area where I-95 connects to the Turnpike and Palmetto Highway, causing heavy delays during the early hours of the day.

Emergency highway crews blocked the northbound on-ramp at Golden Glades with access to the Palmetto Freeway and Turnpike.
