Annabelle Martinelli, a lawyer specializing in sexual violence, is called by a woman who has suffered domestic violence for two years. The victim, Doreen Markowitz, was already in the hospital following her husband’s beating. Fearing reprisals, she did not dare to reveal to the medical staff the circumstances that had led her there: officially, it was a suicide attempt. Annabelle immediately requests that police protection be arranged for her client and that she be placed in a women’s shelter. Meanwhile, investigators Victory Achampong and Branko Dragovic find evidence of abuse in the marital home. But when they learn that Leon, the husband himself, is in the police, the two agents downplay the facts and hide the evidence. In court, testimony further obscures the case, particularly the account of Doreen’s friend, confirming that the young woman would exhibit self-destructive behavior and even be violent towards her husband. Despite her convictions, Annabelle feels reprimanded… how can she get justice for her client?
