In trucks, vans and mobile homes, hundreds of people from the self-proclaimed “God’s Army” began arriving in the southern tip of the United States this Saturday to demonstrate against the immigration “invasion” that they claim is affecting the country.

The organization, which has been operating since 1982 and has committed several acts of violence in the country, promotes far-right ideas and has even called for a “civil war” against liberals to stop the progress of progressive ideas. Migration is one area they oppose.

Under the slogan “Take back our border”, these activists started caravans from various parts of the country to cities along the southern border last week and camped there this weekend. They try to show their disapproval of the immigration policies of the President, Joe Biden.

“Migration at the border is out of control. “We are being invaded and we need to control what is happening,” Robin Forzano, 43, who controls access to a ranch in Texas, told AFP.

They introduced themselves as “We the People” (“We, the People” as the preamble to the US Constitution begins) and also invited veterans, businessmen, ranchers, truckers and the media.

“Join God’s Fight” is written on the body of one of the vehicles that arrived at a ranch in Quemado, a Texas town of 162 residents, with rustic homes scattered in the middle of the valley through which the Rio Bravo, or Grande, runs. Natural border between the United States and Mexico.

Although they may have a large turnout, the same organization exaggerated attendance, suggesting that roughly 700,000 people were expected in the state of Texas this weekend. Despite this, he is asked to monitor the group carefully.

Frontier, “disaster zone”

“When you go to Mexico, there are wonderful people, but it seems like when they cross over to this side, … they get robbed,” said Marty Byrd, 73, a Trump supporter in Eagle Pass.

The town, about 30 kilometers from Quemado, is at the center of a conflict between Texas Governor Greg Abbott and the Biden administration.

The federal government is suing Abbott for taking military control of Shelby Park, which has ramps to access the river, and for placing barbed wire along the riverbank.

In mid-January, the Biden administration reported that Texan troops had blocked border police, under federal jurisdiction, from entering the park to rescue three drowning migrants. Texas denied the charge.

Biden took the case to the Supreme Court, which authorized border police to cut down the barbed wire fence. But the governor has protested and put up more fences.

With a kayak rental business on that river, Jesse Fuentes is directly affected by the situation: “That river today is a disaster zone (…) the park is becoming a military base.”

“There are certain groups that claim to be God’s army, that come into our community to spread hatred (…) I am worried because it is not us,” he added.
