San Diego, San Diego.- After three years of litigation, the city of San Diego, California, agreed to pay the debtors of Jose Alfredo Castro Gutierrez $800,000 for the death of a family member at the hands of that city’s police officers.
In a statement, the Mexican Consulate in San Diego indicated that on October 19, 2020, Castro Gutierrez died as a result of police firing and electric shocks against a Mexican suffering from a mental health crisis.
Faced with police abuse, Castro Gutierrez’s children and widow filed a wrongful death lawsuit, which the City of San Diego eventually accepted and agreed to a restitution agreement.
“The tragic loss of my husband Alfredo has cast a shadow over my life and that of our family. We have lost a husband, a father and an exemplary son. There is nothing left but acceptance and resilience and hope that this pain will never end.
Mexico’s consul general in San Diego, Carlos González, believed the reported agreement set a precedent to prevent police abuses against more compatriots.
“We reiterate our condolences to the Castro Gutierrez family for the sensitive death of Jose Alfredo, while we recognize the organizations that are fighting every day for justice and also with this sensitive case,” he said.
