‘The Last of Us’ Casts Caitlin Dever as Abby and It’s a Great Choice – Drunken Punches Critics
The conversation surrounding The Last of Us is interesting because rabid fans of the game are just as rabid over the casting of the TV show. I remember before the first season went into production, and they were clamoring for Maisie Williams to play Ellie, but that was before the second season. Game of Thrones Alum came to Bella Ramsay. For weeks, the question has been who should take on arguably the most important character in season two, Abby. Rumors have been rife that the role will go Booksmart Star Kaitlyn Dever, and now those rumors have been confirmed.
The news was confirmed by Variety after it dropped on Max and Naughty Dog’s social media channels. For the most part, this is surprising news. Dever has been one of the best actresses ever since her breakout role Short term 12A film that also launched the careers of Brie Larson and Lakeith Stanfield.
However, this decision has raised a lot of debate. Without going too far on what happens The Last of Us Part II, Abby is essentially the other protagonist of that game along with Ellie. Unlike Dever, Abby is physically tough, built like a tank, making her the polar opposite of Ellie. When they finally face each other, you are there to see and feel that disparity.
Dewar is anything but physically imposing.
“Our casting process for season two is the same as season one: we look for world-class actors who embody the spirit of the characters in the source material,” said showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckman. “Nothing is more important than talent, and we are thrilled to have an artist as acclaimed as Kaitlyn join Pedro, Bella and the rest of our family.”
In short; They know the fans are going to complain and they’re getting ahead of it.
Anyway, I understand the fan’s desire to keep everything as close to the source material as possible, but I love this casting. Abby is more than just ruggedly built, she’s mentally tough and has the attitude to match. And if Kaitlyn Dever doesn’t look like Abby, she certainly can portray her other traits. The rest can be fixed by other means.
Also, for those who have never played The Last of Us Part II And don’t know where the story goes…well, they have other things to worry about more.
