fans of The Last of Us Part II Mix fiction with reality
There is a lot of difference between real and reel, but sometimes, the line between them becomes blurred. Something similar happened to Laura Bailey when she lent her voice to one of the most controversial characters in the gaming world – Abby.
After Abby kills the game’s beloved protagonist, Joel, fans are naturally shocked to their core. After all, no one saw it coming! However, perhaps there was a better way to deal with the shock than to send hate to the person behind Abby’s voice.
In a documentary called Grounded II: Making the Last of You Part II, Bailey opened up about the death threats she faced after Joel’s death went live. She said the Internet was flooded with death and violent threats and targeted her to the point that she had to report the worst disturbance to authorities. However, the worst of it all came when Bayley’s newborn son was brought into it by angry fans.
Fighting back tears, Bailey said,
“That’s all I saw every time I went online. Just death threats and threats of violence…the worst of them, really hardcore death threats got through and they made sure they didn’t have anyone living nearby…yes, they were threatening my son. You know who was born during all this. Yes, it was rough. It was rough. But, you know, more than anything like that, it taught me to keep distance.
Bailey’s honesty was enough to bring tears to the eyes of viewers. However, her story is one of many where the actors have to pay a price for their characters’ actions.
