The conscripts open fire on the soldiers, killing at least five

The reason is not yet clear, but tolls are likely to increase. This Sunday, a young soldier killed five other soldiers before escaping from a base in southern Iran, the official Iranian agency IRNA announced. “This (Sunday) evening, one of our soldiers, who was guarding a unit in an army position, entered the soldiers’ rest room and shot his comrades,” the agency quoted a military official as saying.

“Five soldiers lost their lives,” added the same source who suggested the motive was “still uncertain”. The shooter who “immediately fled the barracks” is still being sought.

In the same province as the recent attack

The incident, rare in Iran, took place in Kerman province where at least 89 people were killed in a twin suicide attack by the jihadist group Islamic State on Jan. 3 during a memorial service near a general’s grave.

The former head of the Quds Force, the branch responsible for external operations of the Revolutionary Guards, the ideological army of the Tehran regime, was killed by an American strike in Iraq in January 2020. A key figure in the Islamic Republic, he was celebrated in his home country for his role in defeating ISIS in Iraq and Syria.
