In a recently released documentary of Grounded II: Making the Last of Us Part IIThe Voice actress Laura Bailey has opened up about the hate and attacks she received after portraying Abigail ‘Abby’ Anderson.
“That’s all I saw every time I went online. Only death threats and threats of violence, and worst of all, really hardcore death threats passed, and they made sure no one lived nearby.“
A group of fans hate Abby even before the official game’s release due to leaks circulating online and saw her kill Joel, forcing Ellie’s revenge plot. Not only did Bailey receive death threats, but people also hated her newborn son.
“They were threatening my son. You know who was born during all this. Yes, it was rough. It was rough. But, you know… more than anything, it’s just kind of… it taught me to keep a distance. do you know“
A look back with interview Game informantBailey recalled how she expected criticism of her character, noting that she did not expect it to be so severe.
“I knew there would be a reaction for sure. I knew I was going to get some hate. I did not anticipate the extent. It was a perfect storm. I think the leaks had a lot to do with it. If your first experience with this was in a game, and then you continued to progress, you would have growth and understanding.“
Fans were supposed to empathize with Abby as they learned her story, which was a point many players missed due to leaks.
“But the leaks were out a few months in advance; You had people building barriers and walls for months before they understood that side of the Abbey, and so many people were never able to.“
Bailey won Performance of the Year at The Game Awards 2020 for her role as Abby, which she claimed was the most challenging yet fulfilling experience of her career.
