Oscar Pistorius has been released from a South African prison after serving a nine-year sentence for murdering his girlfriend.

(CNN) — Oscar Pistorius was released on parole and is at home after serving nearly nine years in prison for killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, ​​South African Correctional Services spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo told CNN.

On Valentine’s Day 2013, a South African athlete shot Steenkamp four times through the bathroom door of his home. Pistorius denied murdering her in a rage, saying instead that he mistook her for an intruder. He was initially sentenced to 13 years and five months in prison.

Pistorius was released from Atteridgeville Correctional Center west of Pretoria on Friday morning and will be subject to parole conditions until his sentence expires in 2029.

The South African Correctional Service said in a statement on Wednesday that “normal parole conditions” would apply, including that Pistorius must be at home at certain times of the day. You may not consume alcohol or prohibited substances and must participate in programs prescribed by the Correctional Supervision and Parole Board.

“Like other prisoners on parole, Pistorius will not be able to give interviews to the media,” the statement added.

In November, Reeva Steenkamp’s mother, June Steenkamp, ​​said she was concerned about the safety of other women after she was released on parole.

“At this time I am not sure that Oscar has been rehabilitated,” her statement said.

“Rehabilitation requires a person to honestly engage with the full truth of their crime and its consequences. No one can claim remorse if they are not able to fully commit to the truth. If a person is not remorseful then it cannot be considered rehabilitation. .If it is not rehabilitated, the risk of rehabilitation is high,” he said.

In a statement released Friday, Steenkamp’s mother said her only wish after Pistorius’s release is to be allowed to live out his remaining years “in peace.”

“There can never be justice if your loved one never comes back, and no amount of time spent (in prison) will bring Reeva back,” June Steenkamp said. “We, the ones left behind, are serving a life sentence.”

The athlete, dubbed the “blade runner” for his carbon fiber prosthetic leg and once an inspiration after competing in the 2012 Olympics, became the focus of an investigation that followed around the world.

During the trial, Pistorius pleaded not guilty to one count of murder and one count of possession of a firearm in connection with Steenkamp’s murder.

Prosecutors argued that his killing was intentional and that the shooting happened after the couple argued.

He frequently broke down in court and his past behavior was closely scrutinized.

Pistorius was convicted of murder in 2014 and sentenced to five years in prison. But the High Court upheld the conviction and changed it to murder a year later, increasing his sentence to six years in prison.

The verdict was appealed by prosecutors who claimed the sentence was too lenient. Pistorius’ sentence was increased to 13 years and five months by South Africa’s Supreme Court of Appeal in 2017.
