Flu epidemic intensifies, vaccination campaign lengthens
The flu epidemic, which had already spread throughout the metropolis in mid-January, intensified towards the end of the month, Public Health France announced on Wednesday 31 January. Abroad, the outbreak continues in Guyana, Guadeloupe and Martinique, but has ended in Mayotte, the public health agency notes in a weekly bulletin.
Between January 22 and 28, “All indicators increased rapidly in community medicine and hospitals in all age groups”The agency noted.
In this regard, the vaccination campaign, which specifically targets people above the age of 65 years, has been extended by a month by health officials. Initially scheduled till January 31, it must now run till February 29.
Bronchiolitis on the decline
On the other hand, the situation is calming down for two other major respiratory epidemics: bronchitis, which mainly affects children, and Covid-19. Bronchitis epidemics no longer concern any metropolitan area, even if some remain in post-epidemic stages. In terms of hospitalizations, it may not reach the exceptionally high levels of the 2022-2023 season, but it will still prove significant.
As for Covid-19, which manifests in recurring waves rather than annual epidemics during the winter, indicators decline or remain stable. Especially, “Positivity rates have dropped in the city and in hospitals”Note Public Health France.
