Epic Games returns to iPhone (and only in Europe!)
Thanks DMA
Three years after its exclusion from the App Store (for violating Apple’s T&C); Apple has just allowed Epic Games to return with a developer account — and even allowed Fortnite to return. But this situation is limited, as it only concerns Europe (for once we benefit from exclusivity…).
Because the solution to Epic Games problems therefore comes from DMA. Text requires Apple to authorize third-party stores! So the developer can come back with his head held high and accept Cupertino’s previous T&C without humming his pride. He would simply have to build his own store, though he would still be subject to a prohibitive commission.
As a reminder, there will always be a commission on apps distributed in the App Store and through other means. For third-party stores, the commission will drop from 30 to 17% (+ 3% if they go through Apple’s in-app purchase system). For them, small developers will pay 10% (with 3% added) compared to 15% earlier.
On its website, the famous developer so clarifies We have received our Apple Developer Account and will soon begin developing the Epic Games Store on iOS thanks to the new Digital Markets Act. We plan to launch in 2024 (our store). Epic Games Sweden AB will operate Epic Games Store Mobile and Fortnite in Europe.

A little reminder of the file
As a reminder, everything happened in the summer of 2020, While Epic Games released an update that allows you to purchase your in-game currency through an external method instead of using the App Store’s in-app purchase system. Apple immediately banned Fortnite from the App Store.
In the process, Epic – which orchestrated the attack – launched a massive media campaign against Apple and took it to court. The developer actually maintained that the California firm owned and exercised a monopoly Anti-competitive practices Under the cover of the App Store Guide.
But the decision was not really favorable to one or the other. Apple was forced to relax some App Store rules. But the judge recognized the willful violation of the App Store’s terms and did not force Apple to make Fortnite available in its store until it complied.
