Deadlines for filing taxes in the United States

On Monday, January 29 of the current year, the 2024 tax period began in the United States. From this date, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is collecting declarations of tax liabilities from the previous year.

The IRS advises that taxpayers should look at receipts with dollars entered in 2023 to find out the payments that carry the tax. The federal agency reported its operations schedule and important documents that Americans should review.

Starting January 12, Americans can access the free file digital instrument. For users who earned less than $79,000.00 USD last year, tax returns are free.

On January 29, the IRS began collecting individual tax returns. April 15 will be the last time to declare tax liabilities or request an extension of this date.

Residents of the states of Maine and Massachusetts have until April 17 to file their taxes or must request an extension. October 15 is the last moment to send statements of citizens who sought extension of the schedule.

Documents to be reviewed

Among the required documents that individuals should review are the W-2 forms provided by the employer. There are also government 1099-G forms for subsidizing unemployed workers.

Another form is the 1099-DIV, which is intended for residents who receive profits from investments. Taxpayers with retirement plans or retirement accounts must file Form 1099-R.

In addition, there are Forms 1099-INT and MISC, which correspond to bank and miscellaneous interest charges. People who use financial apps and virtual businesses such as Venmo, CashApp, Etsy or Ebay will need to see a 1099-K form. Health Insurance Marketplace customers must use Forms 1095-A and 8962.
