Bruno Le Maire accused Anne Hidalgo of “playing with democracy” after the vote on SUVs

In an interview with Nice-Matin, the economy minister returned to the civic vote last Sunday in the capital.

A clear opinion. In an interview published this Saturday by the Nice-Matin newspaper, Economy Minister Bruno Le Maire condemned the second citizens’ vote in Paris on the increase in SUV parking prices.

“It’s a hoax. I’m sorry that Anne Hidalgo did this. Let’s be careful not to play with democracy because in the end, it hurts it,” the Bercy boss insisted.

With 54.55% of votes in favour, residents of the capital noted a hike in heavy vehicle prices on Sunday, February 4.

Very low participation rate

The very low participation rate in the vote (5.68%) particularly sparked reactions. The opposition condemned the illegal vote as not reflecting the opinion of Parisians.

Former Minister of Ecological Transition, Francois de Rougi lamented on our antennae that “ideology has replaced ecology”.

“Something repeats itself with the Paris town hall. It is that the enemy is actually designated. Behind the heavy vehicle driver, the suburban and the provincial, because they are the ones who will be overtaxed,” said Francois de Rougi.

On the evening of the election, the mayor of Paris felt that the vote showed that “Parisians were at the forefront of a movement that will be followed by many cities around the world”. She also spoke of her “pride” in the face of a “clear choice”.
