AMLO meets with US delegation; Thought about not receiving them

Mexico City.- President Andrés Manuel López Obrador met with the White House National Security Advisor, Elizabeth Sherwood-Randall, this afternoon at the National Palace.

According to Interior Secretary, Luisa María Alcalde, the issues he will address are mainly security and migration.

This morning, López Obrador acknowledged that the DEA investigation into alleged drug financing of his campaign in 2006 has affected relations.

So much so, the President said in his daily briefing, that he thought about not receiving the United States delegation that visited him at the National Palace.

He said he also sent word to the White House that he would not receive the delegation because of the DEA’s actions in Mexico and the suspicions against him.

In the end, López Obrador changed his mind after a request made to him by President Joe Biden during a telephone conversation on Saturday.

The White House delegation also includes United States Ambassador to Mexico Ken Salazar; and the State Department’s under secretary in charge of immigration, Richard Verma.

Also Lisa Monaco, Deputy Attorney General of the Department of Justice; Christy Canegallo, Chief of Staff of the Department of Homeland Security; and Adam Cohen, deputy director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy, among others.

On behalf of Mexico, the Secretary of Security and Civil Protection, Rosa Isela Rodríguez, attended; Secretary of Defense, Luis Crescencio Sandoval; and Secretary of the Navy, Jose Rafael Ojeda Duran, as well as the mayor.
