A Kansas couple hid a dead relative in their home and collected benefits for more than 6 years, authorities say.

(CNN) — Kansas authorities accused a couple of hiding their relative’s body in their home for more than six years while collecting benefits, court documents obtained by CNN show.

Prosecutors filed charges in Kansas District Court last Wednesday, accusing Lynn Ritter and her husband Kirk Ritter of collecting thousands of dollars in Social Security and pension benefits from Lynn Ritter’s father, identified in the documents as “Michael C.” Court documents.

CNN affiliate KCTV named the man as Mike Carroll.

Carroll died in 2016, according to court documents, but authorities weren’t alerted to the death until Oct. 23, 2022, when Kirk Ritter contacted the Overland Park Police Department about a body inside the residence.

When authorities arrived, the body was “lying on the bed, in a mummified state,” according to court documents.

“After Michael C.’s death in July 2016, 76 direct deposits were made from the plan into Michael C.’s personal bank account, totaling $68,637.79,” court documents say. “Additionally, SSA benefits totaling $147,429.70 were deposited into Michael C.’s personal bank account during this same period.”

Charges against the couple include wire fraud and theft of government funds. He is scheduled to make an initial court appearance on February 2.

CNN could not confirm whether Lynn Ritter and Kirk Ritter have attorneys.
