What opens and closes on Martin Luther King Day 2024?

NEW YORK (CNN) — Monday, January 15, is the birthday of famed civil rights leader Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr.

Although the federal holiday this year coincides with the monarch’s actual birthday, it always falls on the third Monday in January.

Four days after King’s assassination in 1968, Congressman John Conyers introduced legislation to create a federal holiday in honor of the fallen leader. However, the first national observance of Martin Luther King Day did not take place until 1986, after years of demand. New Hampshire was the last state to adopt a holiday honoring the king in 1999.

Here’s what’s open and closed on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day this 2024.
