With Steam Neo Fest, it’s a chance to test promising games with out-of-the-ordinary concepts. This is clearly the case with Backpack Battles: it will use your knowledge of backpack storage to defeat your opponents.
A self-combatant around backpack management
Clothes don’t make the man and that’s a good thing because otherwise we would have missed out on the backpack war. The developers of PlaywithFurcifer made their game available for free during the Steam Neo Fest. Until Monday 7:00 pm (end of event) it is possible to try the concept of the title, which is as crazy as addiction: store your backpack in such a way to defeat your opponents.
Backpack Battles takes the concept of Auto-Battler, a game style split into two stages. The first stage is dedicated to shopping and the second stage is for fighting where… the player doesn’t control anything. So it is during this buying (or management) phase that the player becomes active.
In Backpack Battles, the purchase phase consists only of buying items with your gold coins. In addition to his money, the player is also limited by the space in his bag. Objects should be arranged according to the space they occupy, but also according to their synergy. For example, a witch’s starting item set consists only of mushrooms. We are tempted to integrate other food-type items for our first games. A frying pan and a banana are ideal items to start with but have a complicated volume to include in a backpack.
Once your backpack is well stocked and/or your money is spent, it’s just a matter of finding an opponent worthy of your match. As the battle begins, items activate automatically and randomly to defeat the enemy. If Backpack Battles can be intimidating at first in terms of time to invest in understanding, the reality is quite different. Unlike the most popular ones on the market (Teamfight Tactics and Hearthstone Battlegrounds), this title can be learned very quickly… even if it takes hours to master.

The hours to invest that shouldn’t represent a lot of time from a gaming sensation’s point of view. Backpack Battle quickly becomes addictive. Despite an artistic direction shown by my colleagues (with whom I admit to sharing their criticisms), Learn different types of synergy, to optimize my backpack…and there’s one feature in particular that I can’t wait to try in-depth in the game when it’s released!

This demo version offers two classes to try with Ranger and Reaper. Classes are distinguished by their starting backpack (and the objects they contain) but also by their subclasses. These are unlocked during the game by obtaining an object that will determine their attribute. A reaper may have a specialty related to taking (such as a vampire) while a ranger may be a master of luck. The possibilities are endless… especially since you can merge certain items together to get even better ones.
During one session, I was able to fuse a frying pan with a gem to get a wicked frying pan that I was able to magically combine with two pineapples. More than a crazy side that makes every endeavor memorable. Personally, we can’t wait to dive back into the title when it finally releases on March 8.
