The first such operation was launched by Dieppe Hypermarket (Seine-Maritime). “We were in a meeting with managers and we were looking for an idea to increase sales, a small business innovation… An employee told us about an American show he had seen in which they sell mystery containers. We told ourselves we could do it with carts,” Jeremy Juan, director of Normandy Hypermarket, explains to BFMTV.

When we announced the operation on Facebook, we had more than 200 messages in 30 minutes, mainly from people who wanted to order… We knew right away that it was taking off and to avoid disappointment we added 20 more. Added carts. », explains the hypermarket director to BFM. A simple idea, but one that piques the curiosity of many consumers. The selling prices of these cars vary between 50 and 150 euros. As for the products found there, these are unsold items such as toys, duvets, table services or even small household appliances.

Operations that extend to food products

With the enormous success of the first operation, Normandy Hypermarket decided to expand its initiative to food products. ” We also sold food with trolleys full of Coca-Cola, baby care or biscuits but with a lower discount of 34% to comply with the Egalim law. », mentions Jeremy Juan during an exchange with BFMTV.

So far 500 mystery cars have been sold by Deepay Hypermarket. Thus, the Normandy store liquidated thousands of euros worth of unsold items in just a few months, BFM suggests. Since last October, this type of operation has become widespread in 45 Auchan stores spread across France.
