What is epiphany and how does it relate to the three wise men?

(CNN Spanish) — With 2022 already underway, the year-end festivities are practically over. However, there is still one very relevant to the Catholic Church: Epiphany.

What is an epiphany?

According to the Archbishopric of Cusco, the word means “manifestation of the Lord”, which is why the celebration is also known as the ‘Epiphany of the Lord’.

But, specifically, what is it? “That’s when Jesus made himself known throughout the world at different times and to different people,” says the Archbishop of Cusco.

more than one

The Archbishopric of Cusco says that it is not just one celebration, but that the Catholic Church celebrates three events as Epiphanies:

  • Epiphany to St. John the Baptist on the Jordan River
  • The epiphany to his disciples and his public life begins with a miracle at the wedding at Cana
  • Epiphany to the Three Wise Men

Relationship with the three wise men

Certainly, this last event is where the relationship with the three wise men is seen.

The Archbishopric of Cusco points out that the Epiphany of the Three Wise Men is the most important of the three.

“It is a celebration that revolves around the worship of the birth of the baby Jesus by the three wise men, as a symbol of recognition of the pagan world and as a revelation that Christ is the Savior of all humanity,” he points out.
