Authorities in Russia and Ukraine conducted a prisoner exchange this Wednesday that benefited more than 400 people, as confirmed by both sides, in an exchange reported in which the United Arab Emirates will act as mediator.
“Today, we have recovered more than 200 fighters and civilians from Russian captivity,” the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, celebrated on social networks, stressing that some of these prisoners took part in the defense of the city of Mariupol and the Azovstal steelworks.
Zelensky, who has released images of some of those released, pledged that he would do everything he could to ensure that “all” people could still be returned to Russian hands and thanked those who had worked to ensure that, “all being Despite the difficulties”, this last exchange could have been carried out.
In that sense, he pointed out that despite the “long hiatus” in exchanges, negotiations have never stopped. “We have taken every opportunity, we have tried all mediation options. In every international meeting we have raised the issue of bringing back our prisoners,” he said.
The Russian Defense Ministry, for its part, has confirmed the release of 248 Russian soldiers by Ukraine, which it has reported to Emirati mediation. Moscow has pledged to provide medical and psychological support to all, who will be evacuated on Russian military planes to facilities linked to the ministry.
