Six people have died in a helicopter crash in Southern California
A helicopter carrying six people crashed near a small town in Southern California’s Mojave Desert, officials said Saturday.
The helicopter went down Friday near Baker, a town of 700 people about 153 kilometers (95 miles) southwest of Las Vegas, according to KABC television.
The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office reported that the device had departed Palm Springs Airport at approximately 8:45 a.m. and was headed for Boulder City, Nevada, when the crash occurred around 10:00 p.m. Agents at the police station told the television station that they could not find any survivors and that the cause of the accident was unknown. Messages from The Associated Press to the police station and the Federal Aviation Administration were not immediately returned.
However, it emerged this afternoon that the helicopter crew included Herbert Wigwe, the CEO of Access Holdings, Nigeria’s leading financial services group, as well as his wife and son.
Less than a week ago, a Marine helicopter went down during a downpour in the mountains near San Diego. Five Marines were killed.
Meanwhile, a small plane had to make an emergency landing on a highway in Florida on Friday as well, killing two people.
Boulder City is located 26 miles (41 kilometers) southeast of Las Vegas.
