Should we worry about the “Disease X” mentioned in Davos and causing panic in conspiracy circles?
Heads of state, business CEOs and leaders of non-governmental organizations have gathered in Davos, Switzerland for the World Economic Forum. An opportunity for them to discuss key global issues from economy to health. “A Round Table on Preparing for Disease
Florian Philippot first. The president of the far-right Les Patriotes party took up the subject of X. “Disease X has been discussed by the WHO as the ‘epidemic of the future’ for many years. (…) ‘Prepare’ means in Devosian language: to create fear, to prepare “mRNA vaccines” and the passes that go with them!”, he says. Enough to incite conspiratorial sectors that want to project the next pandemic on world leaders.
Disease X does not exist
“Disease X” is part of a list of priority diseases and pathogens for research and development. Maintained by the WHO, it is presented as a tool that makes it possible to distinguish “diseases that present the greatest risk to public health due to their epidemic potential and/or the absence or inadequacy of countermeasures”. WHO uses it to establish a roadmap for research and development based on growth and needs.
Unlike Covid-19, Ebola, Lassa fever or even Zika that appear out there, “Disease X” does not exist. In fact it is a virus that we do not know yet, but which may be responsible for a dangerous disease for humans and cause a serious international epidemic. It could cause “20 times more deaths than Covid-19”, fears the WHO. The organization therefore recommends the development of a research and development plan should a currently unknown pathogen emerge.
Pathogens that are transmitted from animals to humans cause most modern epidemics. These so-called zoonotic diseases are increasing at an “exponential rate,” according to a study published in BMJ Global Health, which reviewed 60 years of epidemiological data. They could kill 12 times more people in 2050 than in 2020, especially under the effects of climate change. Hence the importance of being prepared.
